Launch the Draft Coach add-in
In Google Docs: go to Extensions → Turnitin Draft Coach. In Word Online: go to Insert → Add-ins → Draft Coach.
Click “Run Similarity Check” in the side panel

How the Similarity Score Works
The similarity score is expressed as a percentage — the proportion of your paper’s text that matches existing sources in Turnitin’s database. A score of 15% means 15% of your paper’s text was found in other documents.
It’s important to understand that a similarity score is not a plagiarism verdict. Properly quoted and cited material will show up in the similarity report. So will common phrases, boilerplate language, and standard academic expressions. The score is a starting point for review, not a final judgment.
Most institutions do not have a fixed “acceptable” threshold. Your instructor interprets the report in context. That said, a score below 15–20% for an original essay is generally considered low. Above 30–35%, it’s worth reviewing which passages are matched and whether they’re properly attributed.

Turnitin’s AI detection feature exists on the instructor-facing side of the platform — the full submission report that your professor receives. As a student using Draft Coach, you do not have access to an AI detection score for your own paper. What to Do If You Don’t Have Draft Coach Access
Access to Turnitin Draft Coach depends entirely on your institution’s Turnitin license. If your university doesn’t offer it, or if your program doesn’t include it, there’s no way to purchase it individually.
Students without Draft Coach access have two practical options. First, check with your university library — some institutions have separate similarity-checking tools available through the library portal. Second, use an external similarity or plagiarism checker before submitting your paper. These tools won’t use Turnitin’s exact database, but they can still catch unattributed paraphrasing, missing citations, and passages that closely match online sources.
Note: Draft Coach (sometimes written as “draftcoach” or searched as “Turn It In Draft Coach”) is available through Google Workspace and Microsoft 365 add-ins — not as a standalone app or download.
